* -MWWWI Members had a wonderful time at the LOC book festival going to workshops
* -buying books and getting them signed by the authors.
* - Mingling in the book-loving crowd
* - Receiving the bright red LOC book festival bags to cart our gifts and other 'stuff.'
* - The gifts consisted of the festival poster, info pamphlets, book marks, and other book related stuff

A few poems were read BEFORE eating. A few gifts were exchanged and MWWWI meeting dates reviewed. Afterwards, we took pictures and strolled through the picturesque streets and shops of Ellicott City, which is home to The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, and is listed amongst America's most affluent communities,

Meeting at Haleemah's -Planning for MWWWI 2013-2014 New Year!

Saturday, May 11, MWWWI met at Haleemah's house to plan the new year. We discussed the reassessment of our goals and how we will accomplish them within a new time frame. Since we have two or more books It was decided that we should expand our time for completion of goals to a two-three year time frame. We also discussed what activities and workshops we would like to include during the new year: writing conferences, trip, poetry reading venue, complete the Big Beautiful Book writing resource package, research printing companies for most economical package, etc. 

The meeting dates for the new year are, Sept 21-22-(LOC )Library of Congress on the National Mall, Wash. DC), Oct. 12, Nov. 9, and Dec. 14. For 2013, Jan.11, Feb. 8, Mar.8, Apr. 12, May 10 and June 14, 2014.

Excitement abounds as we look forward to our annual luncheon on June 8, at Tea on the Tiber in Ellicott City, MD. Insh'Allah, we will see you r face in the place!

MWWWI Attends Women Committee of Masjid AS Saffat Annual Conference 2013, At Marriott Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center , Ellicott, MD (March 29 - 31)
 There was much to see and do and all our expectations were met and then some.  I want to thank all the sisters who participated in making this conference a success, contributing to the wonderful time had by MWWWI members. To sum up our experience I wrote a poem, a loose interpretation of a ghazal, and recited it at the 'open mike' night.

COMING to SAFFATT GHAZAL by Zakia Iman Shahbaz March, 2013

I’m glad to be here to be a friend, after 30 years, it’s not the end, coming to Saffat
It’s a grand opportunity to befriend, coming to Saffat

We seek a joyous ride, with sisters from far and wide
We become a joyous family blend, coming to Saffat

Happy vending is worthwhile as we walk up and down the aisles.
I learned to vend and what not to spend, coming to Saffat

At the conference it’s keen to learn about the Deen
From an array of classes to commend, coming to Saffat

Classes are tuned to our needs inspiring us to do good deeds
We read, listen, tape, and make new friends, coming to Saffat

But don’t forget to bring your passes, to go to meals and to classes
Or you may miss many lessons to attend, coming to Saffat

There are many rows of stylish, colorful clothes
And other items of the latest trends, coming to Saffat

At first glance, the conference runs like a choreographed dance
But after hours fun we wish we could extend, coming to Saffat

We share, play, swim, meet, we also network and yes, eat,
Mingling with the sisters is time we do not misspend, coming to Saffat

30 years have come but not gone, attendance has swelled to a throng
This conference is a blessing on which we have come to depend, coming to Saffat

Zakia leads us to sing this song and does not for annonymity long
She enjoys, learns, grows and insh’Allah, the next conference she will attend, coming to Saffat.

The following is some information about the ghazal:

It is older than the sonnet.  Ghazals originated in Arabic verse, came to the Indian subcontinent and flourished in Persia in the 13th and 14th centuries. Traditionally, the theme of this type of poem is connected to love and longing, either a romantic desire for a mortal beloved or a spiritual longing for communion with a higher power; ex. a devotional love poem. It is very popular today and is easily adaptable to writing songs.
 The poem usually consists of five to fifteen or more couplets. The two lines of the first couplet end exactly the same with a rhyming word before this ending. In the remaining couplets only the last line ends exactly the same as the endings in the first couplet with the rhyming word before it. Usually the last couplet contains the name of the poet.

​ Peace and Blessings,
     My name is Haleemah Muhaymin, not too long ago I learned that women around the world do not have access to the necessary feminine supplies needed to function on a daily basis. Girls do not attend school at least one week of every month because they do not have the necessary sanitary supplies needed when they have their period. For the past two years I’ve sewn purses and donated them to the Sew Powerful Organization based in Washington State, which then fills them with the sanitary supplies. The filled purses are taken to Lusaka Zambia and are gifted to the girls. I am so humbled and very honored to be a part of that, but I want to do more. I began researching how to make quality reusable cloth period pads and I started sewing.
My mission (to empower girls), is to gift as many girls as I can in Africa and worldwide with a purse and ten sanitary pads inside. Having a period and proper protection should not be a hardship on any female especially for young girls who lose so much time every month during their educational years.
The materials I used for making cloth pads:
Toppers (placed against the skin)- 100% quilters cotton, flannel/brushed cotton
Core (absorbent center)- flannel, terry cloth
PUL (polyurethane laminate) waterproof fabric to prevent leakage
Backers (back of pad) flannel, fleece
Poly resin snaps (to snap around the panty crotch)
     If you want to be a part of this great cause you can donate the materials to make the pads: I will recycle gently used 100% cotton clothing such as flannel, quilter’s cotton, fleece or you can purchase any of the above mentioned fabric and/or PUL by the yard.
The fabrics I used for the purses:
Cotton, cotton blends,
Jean fabric, corduroy
Soft canvas fabric
*The girls love color and pretty designs.
