An excerpt from The Vegetarian’s Invitation:
They accept my invitation without warning or hesitation. Just coming for a visit, a reunion or a class, But for me it’s an experience that in their minds will last. Remove their coats, hats and shoes. Comfort before we proceed Through my foyer to my kitchen, my arena indeed. They are clueless yet responsive and my question seems shallow “Would you like a bite to eat” in a tone, very mellow. Their answers lay the foundation of my culinary sensations I have deep determination to produce a kind of sedation. If they’re modest and ask for water, then its water with a twist And beside it something new for them, too inviting to resist. They always like it, no, they love it and start to get excited Then I offer something else and intently watch them bite it. I’m attracted to reactions, approval from their lips I slip away in concentration, they enjoy light conversation My heart is racing but I’m pacing. How am I going to drop this bomb? But that’s only the beginning of my veggies, sauce and dips. As I begin to serve them I’m fearless, my reputation on the line A euphoric feeling of what came from these hands of mine. The plating is immaculate, colors and aromas that pop When the food is served before them, conversations start to stop. . . . See MWWWI Sixth Annual Folio: Lawful Pleasures, to read the rest. |
